Bermuda

In all my travels, and future travel plans, Bermuda has never been on my radar. This tiny, hook shaped island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, took me by surprise.

My roommate had to travel to Bermuda for a lengthy period of time for business purposes, and she did not want to go alone. So a few other friends and I joined her for two weeks.

Just seconds after getting off the airplane, we were met with a wall of humidity. The kind of humidity that makes your entire body dewey from a thin layer of sweat, your clothes cling to your skin and hair goes flat. Being from "sunny and seventy-five" Santa Monica, we were unprepared for that kind of heat. Not to mention, we arrived at 10 o'clock at night, and there was still 90% humidity.

We were greeted by Cy, our taxi driver for the duration of the trip. He told us all about Bermuda and what we had to fit into our trip, as we drove in the dark to our condo. He also pointed out a noise that sounded like the screeching of a rusty swing set, or flag pole, and told us to get used to it. Bermudian tree frogs begin to whistle at sunset, and continue throughout the night!

We started our first day on Bermuda at the Coral Beach Club. It's white sandy shore went on for miles in either direction, perfectly complimented by the most vivid, blue water I'd ever seen. I couldn't stop smiling. We were in paradise. Of course, my camera was in constant use, as well.

Our weeks consisted of more trips to the beach club, exploring Cook's island and Hamilton, snorkeling around Police island, a boat excursion through Paradise Lakes and its caves, driving the length of the island, and experiencing delectable meals at the high end restaurants.

The people of Bermuda were extremely warm and hospitable, and turned us on to the best, most flavorful fish sandwich you will ever find. Art Mel's. After a long day in the sun, a fish sandwich and ice cold beer were all we we wanted. It doesn't sound like much, but my mouth still waters just thinking about it.

We eventually got used to the heat, the stickiness that never quite left our skin, the unexpected rain, the funky pastel painted houses, and even those oh-so-noisy frogs. Bermuda felt like home for those two weeks, and I hope to go back one day and once again take in all of the beauty and wonder this island has to offer.
